Search Engine Marketing is good for the Environment.

Recent data currently estimates that 100 million trees a year are cut down in order to send what is considered “Junk Mail” to U.S. households. Given the recent publicity surrounding global warming and record temperatures throughout the world, businesses and marketers should look at this data as an opportunity to stop the feeding of a unwanted and obsolete demand.

Understanding that in a “TiVo world” consumers are no longer sitting around waiting to be bombarded with push advertising and media; moreover  today consumers search for information to aid them in their buying decisions. This is why search engine marketing is growing so fast. Rather than pushing an advertisement onto any one in front of it. Internet marketing is pulling consumers towards the information, goods or services they are proactively seek to buy or have an interest in. Best of all no trees are harmed in the production of search engine marketing or search engine optimization. That is why I consider Internet advertising to be green technology and eco friendly to the environment.

Additional motivation for businesses and direct mail marketer to embrace SEM is the fact that current standard mail rate are seeing increases by 20-40 percent. Even more motivation is that 15 states are currently introducing legislation that will create the direct mail equivalent of the Do Not Call and Do Not Fax registries. The current states looking to pass this legislation are (Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Maryland, Michigan, Montana, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Rhode Island, Texas, Vermont and Washington).

Lastly search engine marketing contains all of the dynamic components marketers seek to incorporate when delivering a marketing message. It is creative, innovative, has a captive audience and is germane to how consumers look to make a purchasing decision today. Internet Marketing the New Word of Mouth

It may not be obvious how “tagging of content, user rated blogs and social networking sites like MySpace and facebook can help businesses. But the fact is this is the new word of mouth marketing. As a consultant in New York City I speak with many business owners who have been establish for some time and consider having a steady following of clients who recommend their services to other. Although people do provide some form of word of mouth, the fact is customers are not going around everyday recommending every service or product they have purchased. This fact is true in the brick and mortar world, but online people are recommending things all day long.

There is a real tipping point occurring right now. Everyday there are 120,000 new blogs developed online. 22% of Adults now read blogs at least once a month. 19% of these adults are members of some social networking site like myspace, facebook or Linkedin. This is the new space where people are providing real comments and recommendations to products or services they have purchased. This is happening at lightning speed because it a more efficient and effective. When consumers have a positive or negative experience with some product or service they are increasingly turning to blogs and social networking site to vent and let others know about their experience. For good or bad this is happening today. Businesses larger and small should take not and look to be a part of this new media channel.

Worst case scenario a bad recommendation can provide valuable feedback to the business on what they may be doing wrong. Best case scenarios include consumers that were very satisfied with the purchase experience and happy to tell the world. Not only will this be valuable content to link a website to but it can also become a form of viral marketing shared throughout the world wide web. Best of all this form of word of mouth marketing is very powerful and at the end of the day totally free.

Business owners are increasing their use of Internet Advertising & Search Engine Marketing

A report released by emarketer.com (Internet research and analytics company) on August 9th 2007 highlighted the fact that internet advertising and search engine marketing is surpassing traditional print and other advertising media, to become the dominate choice for business promotion.

The statistics in the report are very compelling and leave little doubt as to why the internet and search engine marketing are growing exponentially. Business owners and other entities using internet marketing to grow their business and increase sales are currently investing $21.7 Billion dollars a year into internet marketing and advertising. This revenue generating expense is scheduled to more than double in the next 4 years to a forecasted $44 Billion dollars by 2011.

Business advertisers today have become more aggressive by shifting budgets from traditional advertising like yellow pages, newspapers, television and radio and investing those budgets into internet advertising and search engine marketing. Additionally blog marketing and social network marketing are starting to see some real interest from business owners.

Keyword advertising continues to be the most popluar strategy in use today. This is due mainly in part because keyword advertising can be implemented on any size budget and for any industry product or service.

The facts in these findings are not surprising to me; it is very simple. The reason why internet advertising and search engine marketing is growing so well is because it simply works better than traditional advertising.

It works in ways that old school advertising does not. Traditional advertising is all based on a push marketing. Push marketing meaning to push a marketing message onto those in front of the advertisement. This message is delivered without any request by the receiver of the message. For example when you are sitting in front of your TV and a commercial comes on. The commercial may or may not be relevant to you. You may not be looking to buy anything that is being sold in the advertising. So you just change the channel or get up and do something else before what you were watching comes back on.

Internet advertising and search engine marketing are completely opposite. Instead of push marketing, it is pull marketing. Pull marketing is when those proactively looking for something are pulled towards a message or advertisement that is completely relevant to what they are searching for. Thus the term “search engine marketing.” I like look at it as the 21st century equivalent to referral marketing. When you ask a friend “do you know a good dentist?” They refer you to a dentist they know. This same concept applies to the internet. When you ask or type into Google’s search box dentist nyc, you are asking Google to refer you to a dentist in new york city. You are proactively looking for a dentist and Google is referring you to a list of the top dentist it knows and shows you a page full of dentist.

As an internet marketing consultant in New York City the media capital of the world; I consult all types businesses. What I see is that the more internet savvy the business owner is the quicker they are at adapting internet advertising and search engine marketing. If you are a business owner contemplating search engine marketing for your business, first spend some time searching for your services or products on the internet. If you cannot find your business but see your competition then you need to decide if your business want to be competitive in today’s business world.
